Land Rovers 4th Discovery generation was first seen in 2009 before enjoying a significant facelift with upgrades from 2013, the legendary all-terrain vehicle came equipped with the SDV6 3.0 litre diesel power plant mated to an 8-speed auto transmission with paddle option. 252bhp @ 4000rpm with a mountain moving 601nm torque @ 2000rpm ensures 60mph can be achieved in 9 seconds whilst still promising a frugal 30mph from an impressive 2.5 ton All Wheel Drive.
Country Classic Cars were requested to inspect this 2014 Discovery XS by a regular client when engine failure had been suggested. The owner was looking to move on with alternate arrangements and after considering the excellent condition and potential of this example we decided to get the SDV6 rebuilt by JLR Engines Ltd. As their name suggests they are Land Rover specialist engineers who replaced the crankshaft fitted new main & big end bearings, replacement genuine oil pump. Line bore and replacement seals, gaskets, pistons and rings, valves reseated with new valve stem seals. Fully skimmed and pressure tested cylinder heads with polished camshafts with new camshaft link and timing chains replaced. Refitted the motor with a new oil cooler and injector seals and their work comes with a 6k mile / 6 month warranty. At the same time the air con system was re-gassed with oils and coolants replaced, the Discovery now performs as it should although we would recommend a ‘running in’ period should be kept in mind.
The documents confirm 3 previous owners from registration April 2014 with a mileometer reading 92216 and it comes with an MOT until February 2026 the original dealer pack and main dealer service history (taken from the JLR data base) is as follows.

A JLR colour option that remains available in 2025 this exterior is clothed in Santorini Black Metallic and close inspection reveals little in the way of damage or even stone chips. The n/s rear door features a small scratch that we will look to touch in prior to sale, also the n/s front alloy has some corrosion and would benefit from a refurb. All tyres are Perelli and both fronts are new with less than 500 miles travelled, the rear o/s will require replacing in a few thousand miles whilst the n/s is half worn.
The nice addition of side steps can be used entering this superb cabin, robust yet luxurious with touch screen tech and large chunky controls, over mats that have kept the carpeting near perfect whilst the seating covers offer minimal wear even the drivers. The seven-seat configuration allows for a massive loading area through to the front or any combination (3, 4, 5 or 6 seated) and with each row being slightly higher towards the rear all passengers enjoy great vision forward. The standard spec is high with far too much for listing here with parking sensors, keyless entry and auto levelling headlights the norm. We noted a warning for the Eco/secondary battery illuminates after standing and this will be replaced with a new one prior to sale, the main battery has been tested and is in excellent condition.
On the move this Discovery is a joy, the motor is fresh so it should be but it’s not all about that turbocharge V6. The chassis and suspension feels tight with plenty of feedback through the steering, there are no rattles or unwanted vibrations and whilst it has no pretentions to be a sportscar it isn’t sluggish and would certainly be ideal for crossing continents, either on or off the tarmac. Overall, we think this is now an excellent example with many more years (and thousands of miles) to offer and best leave the RAC journalist to sum up when he said ‘a Discovery’s different, with a sheer depth of capability that’s constantly tempting you into finding reasons to test it, clever and classless, a uniquely capable car of its kind and a British success story that we should be proud of.’
