Introduced in October 1968 the Series 2 version of the iconic E-type was subject to several design alterations from the previous model. Interior door handles were recessed, and the dash switches went from toggle to rocker types. Headlight covers removed with larger sidelight clusters front and rear and to allow for the option of air con whilst improving cooling air flow the bonnet mouth was increased. Bumpers proved most noticeable; the rear now comprised of a three-piece wraparound option that was positioned higher to accommodate a square number plate. All very logical considering demands of the huge export market, especially for the Roadster / convertible, where, of the 8630 built 91% were assembled as left-hand drive. The Stateside market took priority (re marketed as the Jaguar XKE) and period advertising proclaimed the Series 2 would ‘always look like next year’s car’. Mechanically the exhaust tail pipes were splayed to navigate the number plate also Girling brake calipers became standard fit. The Series 2 E-type ran from October 1968 to September 1970, available in several versions, including the 4.2-litre engine Open Two Seater, Fixed Head Coupe (4860) and Two Plus Two (5330). A Roadster/convertible came in at a mere £2117 in period and no doubt is one of the few cars that has not decreased in desirability over the decades.
Country Classic Cars are pleased to offer the Jaguar E Type XKE for sale on behalf of the long-term current owner. Despatched 20th May 1970 LHD chassis 13538 finished in Sable with beige interior trim was shipped to British Leyland Distribution in New York. Not much is known of its two decades Stateside but we know some time was spent in the south. In June 1992 UK resident John Kaylor purchased the (now red) E Type from Vantage Sportscars Inc in Orlando when the milometer read 28,589. Transported to Jacksonville where it was loaded onto the Pacific Breeze V71direct to Southampton arriving late July. The history file carries dozens of invoices from this period as a full restoration was carried out including floor pans, boot floor and rear quarters. Images at the time show car in various states also the conversion returning the carbs to triple SU’s. Fast forward 16 months to the next and current custodian who took on the completed XKE and could enjoy several years of limited invoices all bar service items etc. A separate file details preparation for a complete engine rebuild by E Type specialist Richard Venn, carried out in 1997 the work ran to 88 hours labour plus several thousand pounds in parts. At this time the milometer was also sent for repair, and we believe was then set to zero. 2004 and front brake discs, pads and calipers were replaced, the following year Rees Bros fitted a new unleaded cylinder head and a 5-speed Getrag gearbox conversion. A new propshaft, starter motor, clutch slave, washer pump, hoses and radio (plus several routine repairs) resulted in a further £14k being invested into this E Type. June 2005 at 2728 miles steering rack and track rod ends were replaced and a radiator in 2007. The car has been used very little since, covering just a couple of hundred miles per annum with the most recent outlay being a rubber body seal kit in 2020 and a new fuel pump last year. We also know that in 2021 the car enjoyed a bare metal respray at RMC Motorworks near Horsham but unfortunately no paperwork is in the history file but 52 photographs covering all stages are included.
As expected, the exterior presents very well, paint finish is bright and so is the chrome with just one shallow indent to the n/s rear of the bumper whilst the o/s rear over rider has a slight graze. The chrome wires need attention with the o/s rear showing kerb damage whilst the Avon tyres fitted are aged they carry plenty of tread. We noted the hood securing points by the door openings are both missing, this maybe repairable but best budget for a replacement.
The cabin warrants investment, carpets would benefit from removal and cleaning whilst there are several trim items missing and insecure from the lower dash, we will endeavour to locate/refit prior to sale. We will also look to refresh under the engine bay area whilst carrying out our checks prior to arranging an MOT test.
The straight six starts without hesitation, 40lbs oil pressure when warm and requires very little encouragement to get down the road with enthusiasm. Our short test confirmed this XKE offers a good platform for a truly great E Type with many of the issues being cosmetic in nature and not helped with years of inactivity. For those chasing the completed concours example this car is not for you but perfect for the ‘hands on’ enthusiast who may not have enjoyed the budget to make their dream a reality.
