1987 Land Rover 110

The ultimate off roader project ...

£3,995

Timeless, trailblazer … Land Rover’s words not ours, but phrases owners of the legendary 110 model will certainly concur. It was back in 1971 when the Series III was launched and a decade later the replacement for the aged 109-inch model was nearing production. First sighted in 1983 the 110 featured coil springs, all synchromesh gearboxes with 5 forward ratio’s, wheel arches with a large black grille. A year later the trusted diesel option (that had served them for 22 years) enjoyed a massive upgrade, lengthened stroke, improved torque with updated cylinder head and fuel injection which with later glow plug technology aided cold starting, increased fuel economy and offered 68bhp. This engine would go on to be the choice of the British Army and London Taxi drivers for many years. Permanent four wheel drive with lockable diff and a more comfort inside the cabin proved popular with those crossing frozen fields in the early hours.

Country Classic Cars are pleased to be able to offer this Land Rover 110 on behalf of the current owner. Registered June 1984, this ‘ragtop project’ certainly offers plenty of potential, its appearance may not take top step in any concours competitions, but it is honest and clearly has nothing to hide. The underside offers a good solid base and whilst the panels may have the appearance of a sand blasted desert dweller these also do not require large replacement sections, on the contrary the potential is there for a refresh or live with it as is. The canvas style top is complete and secure without any holes or damage. Interior trim is remarkably good, 3 front seats show no signs of collapse with unmarked covers, these may well be a recent addition.  The twin rear benches are in similar good health, the flooring is tired certainly but the dash gauges operated correctly as does the original radio cassette player.

A history file that is more comprehensive than many high-end classics this 110 has benefitted from investment over the decades, and although the mileometer proudly shows 205654 miles there is no doubt the funds have been allocated to make this easily possible including engine and drive train repairs. Far too many invoices to list individually but the most recent years are as follows.

2015 – 21 invoices

2016 – 12 invoices

2017 – 1 invoice

2018 – 5 invoices including clutch / exchange gearbox @ 188446

2019 – 3 invoices including water pump / timing belt @ 193379

2020 – 3 invoices including rear silencer / service @ 197164

2021 – 2 invoices including steering box / calipers and discs @ 205197

We have test driven this Land Rover several times and I can report she never fails to start, first turn of the key every time. When cold some black smoke is emitted but once warm subsequent starts tend to became smoke free. This example enjoys power steering, an option that is gratefully accepted especially with off road rubber fitted. Clutch is firm and both first and reverse select with ease, there is a concern with bulking/synchro issue going into 3rd gear but this didn’t happen on my test drive … all five forward gears selected normally. Brakes are good and it performs similar to any other Land Rover and better than some. Our short walk around video (see below) includes footage of the engine running.

A project with plenty of potential, a working vehicle that we feel that with some time and investment has many more years to offer however the next custodian chooses to use it.

For additional information please message with your email address for detailed images or a short walk-round video; we will forward the file via ‘We Transfer’ a free to use and safe service or Whats Ap if you supply your mobile phone number. Country Classic Cars operate by appointment only as our cars are kept in secure storage although currently, we are happy to offer unhindered viewings and test drives.
