Mercedes (V140) S500 Coupe, the last over-engineered car to carry the three pointed star with development of the 140 series beginning as far back as 1981. Planned production for the W140 saloon was originally set for 1989 but pilot examples were not produced until 1991 by which time the model was suspected to have cost Mercedes $1 billion to develop. The S-class coupe arrived in 1994, carrying such advanced technology that went some way to explaining the cost over runs. Initially, the model would be called the S500 Coupe this would become the CL500 (C140) in 1996 and is the perfect choice of classic for those seeking the most advanced luxury liner of the 90s without the image of a limousine chauffeur. When it comes to doors, often less is more and the coupe attitude certainly works for the big S-class Mercs of this period. The largest S-class coupe ever built (over 5 metres) first displayed at the North American Motor Show in Detroit 1992 followed by Geneva a few months later.
The car that had everything … as standard
Electric sunroof, trunk pop out handle, inferred central locking, double glazing (that drops for access when door handle used), electric folding heated mirrors, headlight wash-wipe, Eltanin 18-inch 5-spoke monobloc alloy wheels, dual zone climate control, electric heated/memory seating, electric windows, Becker audio six CD, leather interior trim, ESP electronic stability, butlers arms seatbelts, telescopic parking aids in reverse, abs, EBD, speed sensitive power steering, self closing doors etc etc … it wouldn’t be excessive to say all your automotive needs are catered for.
Another classic from the stable of Country Classic Cars owner Paul Gravely who acquired this 4 owner Mercedes in 2020. The history file is extensive with both stamped service book and paperwork copies.

At Country Classic Cars we find it’s best to present a detailed write up of any classic we sell, be it a commission sale or in this case in house. We set out to present both the good and bad aspects which can only be achieved after a full inspection. This helps to avoid ‘buyer’s remorse’ especially for those purchasing from abroad or interested parties travelling distances to view. The SL 500 Coupe / CL500 was considered by most experts to be the best model in terms of power, weight distribution and equipment and visually the Coupe is certainly imposing. Finished in Azurite Blue Metallic this coupe features straight panels with factory gaps with original plaques and stickers attached to the front panel. We noted a small indent to the top of the n/s front wing with a slight crease to the adjacent wheel arch. Two small areas of lacquer peel on the rear bumper plus a tiny scratch on the o/s rear quarter. All four alloy rims present very well, minus kerb damage although any future custodian will have to consider fresh rubber to the front in the near future whilst the rears are more recent.
The cabin features an abundance of Nappa grey leather which is ruched on the door panels plus Teutonic wood trim, thick pile carpets and a centre console/dash that enjoys more gadgetry than a space shuttle. Unsurprisingly everything works as it should and this interior appears showroom fresh, offering minimal wear and justifying some of the model budget overrun; quality lasts and this space is simply outstanding. Once the ‘butlers arm’ offers your seat belt and the 12 way adjustable seat grips you in luxury its all about the drive. Start up is without fuss, as is the seamless gear selection from the 4 speed automatic, this Coupe slides silently through the air benefitting from a drag of just 0.30cd. Performance is a given, but delivery is special, an enthusiastic right foot releases a surging power with minimal audio; the most comfortable Grand Tourer and one of the best kept classic secrets. Refined and rare, the very best from Stuttgart built before the accounts took control … its was overdue, over budget, over teched and over the top in many ways but can never be undersold. A full pre sales inspection will be carried out prior to customer collection and the purchaser can also expect a fresh MOT.
