No doubt the nineties were a high point in the Honda story, several sporting models to offer including the Integra & Accord Type R’s, the NSX and in 1999 the S2000. Designed in part to celebrate 50 years of car production this two-seat soft top moved in the opposite direction to Honda’s regular tin top, FWD mainstays. It’s fair to say from a slow uncertain start the S2000 became more popular over the years to having the label ‘icon’ liberally scattered when in earshot of excited petrolheads. Indeed, Motortrend magazine currently conclude ‘we knew the Honda S2000 was a sweet handling little two-seater sports car when it was new, but many of us didn’t realize just how much we’d yearn for it after it was discontinued in 2009. Don’t believe it? Check any auction or car-buying site. S2000s are now being sold at well over their original $34,995 asking price. And with good reason.’
Honda took Mazda’s MX5 concept (which traces back to the MGB Roadster) and launched the front-mid engine, RWD sportster concept onto another level. Hand built VTec engines with 9000rpm on tap, 50/50 weight distribution, superb handling and armed with what most enthusiasts consider the best 6-speed manual gearbox ever produced. No need for an options list, the standard spec included everything whilst being reliable enough to win the Top Gear Survey 3 times.
Country Classic Cars are pleased to offer on behalf of the current owner this Honda S2000, registered April 2000 and showing 74571 miles with two previous owners. Recent work carried out includes a new clutch, wheel bearing (n/s/r) and wheels refurbished all carried out at the end of 2024. We have taken the chance to put this Honda onto a ramp and inspect the underside (images available) and we can confirm it presents very well. No rust, no leaks and no damage to report. We noted a small dent to the n/s door, fingernail size and the paint is not broken also the front bumper base has caught a dreaded speed hump at some stage leaving small scratches. Blemishes above the wheel arch on the o/s rear quarter panel whilst the recently refurbed rims remain unmarked and benefit from recent Avon rubber all round. The interior is a delight, minimal wear to trim or leather even the driver’s seat looks fresh, the carpets are excellent topped with a new set of factory over mats. The original audio/CD unit is installed and a quick test of electric windows, mirrors and the folding roof confirmed everything operated correctly. Dash display is digital, described in period as ‘Tokyo by night’ with switchgear mainly soft toggle type with the added pleasure of a large red ‘start’ button; this cabin presents to showroom standard.
A short road test is all it takes to appreciate why the S2000 enjoys a massive following, this car feels tight and willing. The engine is happy around the local lanes, quite docile and quiet but no doubt has the potential to make serious ‘progress’. The suspension is firm but certainly not harsh with superb feedback through the leather padded steering wheel and like any other Honda model it feels equally content in town or a twisting B road. As for the famous six speed box, well that deserves all the plaudits it has received. So slick you only need to think about the next ratio and the short shift selects and with a recent clutch changing gear becomes something to enjoy and not endure. The S2000 is all about the drive and this example is simply a delight.
