The debate rages … surely the ‘TR5’ is the most desirable of the TR dynasty? Inheriting the Michelotti lines from the ‘4’ and ‘4A’ but also featuring an all new (for the time) 2498cc straight six whilst boasting another first with Lucas petrol injection; points must make it favourite. The production line at Canley saw the first cars drive away autumn 1967, a run that lasted just 15 months before Karmann reshaped both front and rear ends for the TR6. Genuine 150bhp ensured 120mph performance with a sub 9 second 0-60mph (the fastest TR) and with only 2947 built certainly the rarest option whilst visually that body ticks all the styling boxes. To argue against the TR5’s desirability demands a strong case and the allure they enjoy on the classic market reflects that.

Country Classic Cars are pleased to present this superb Triumph TR5 for sale on behalf of the current custodian. A build date of 7th August 1968 is recorded, and it is believed a manufacturer engine change was carried out during the first years, the milometer currently displays 61554. Two large history files which include a photo album with images taken early 1990’s showing the car stripped down prior to body shop repairs. Corrosion was cut out of several areas (mainly floor pans) and pictures progress showing the shell alone, separated from the chassis. At this time we suspect the original chassis (CP27350) was galvanised, a worthy improvement as it presents perfectly to this day. Repainted and trimmed to original spec this TR5 displayed at events through the 90s with the current owner taking over in 2008 at 49k miles. Under his watch the history file has expanded, although invoices date from much earlier the ones of real interest to any potential buyer cover the past decade and especially 2015. Classic restoration specialists P&T of Byfleet stripped and removed the interior, doors, boot lid and bonnet prior to carrying out just one minor repair to the n/s door. The shell was then treated to coats of the original Jasmine (code 34) and not Primrose as maybe suggested, this included engine bay plus boot area. At this time the engine went to renowned builder CMES (Classic & Modern Engine Services) in Bracknell; used and recommended by ourselves at Country Classic Cars. Their rebuilds are extensive and detailed, using quality parts only including fresh big end bearings, timing chain set, oil pump and cylinder head valves. Post build test confirmed the motor developed 150bhp with oil pressure at 68lbs idle. Once completed the drive train was reinstalled (including new clutch) into the freshly painted bay and the cabin benefited from many new items including carpet set and belts whilst the suspension was upgraded with fresh poly bushes. The car currently runs Pertronix ignition with Cobalt leads and sports coil and more recently the brake servo has been overhauled and fresh Bridgestone tyres fitted all round. Included in the sale is another soft top plus sealed in bubble wrap an unused Jasmine hard top, old tax discs and test certificates going back decades and Country Classic Cars will carry out a valet, detailed inspection and put the TR5 through a fresh MOT.

Whilst there is no such thing as the perfect classic this Triumph is difficult to fault, panel gaps are precise and the Jasmine (yellow) finish is flawless, even the odd stone chip is missing from this bonnet. As previously mentioned, the chassis is galvanised and thus is free from corrosion, as is the body shell which impressed our staff up on the ramp. For those chasing ‘concours’ this TR5 is close to that standard, a show winner certainly. The Minilite rims may not please the purist, but we feel they suit the car whilst the interior offers originality plus an older Motolita steering wheel, the black carpets and seat covers are recent. Start up is prompt with healthy oil pressure and all the dials operated correctly when tested. The clutch is firm but smooth and gear selection precise with the overdrive performing as it should and obviously this straight six is willing with a sporting audio that ensures any in-car entertainment unnecessary. Smoother roads are preferred as the suspension is firm but not harsh whilst the steering offers ample feedback and overall, any road test confirms this TR stands out; it is a superbly presented and well-sorted example.
